Tim Nelson

Conductor

BIO

Timothy Nelson served as Head of Music for the Netherlands Opera Studio from 2011-2014. Having studied harpsichord, collaborative keyboards, and conducting at Indiana University and Peabody Conservatory, he has conducted numerous productions in North America and Europe, including Charpentier's David et Jonathas at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the national touring production of Acis and Galatea. Upcoming work includes Orphee et Eurydice for Opera Grand Rapids; Le Nozze di Figaro for the Nederlandse Reisopera and La Calisto for English Touring Opera. In America, Nelson conducted for American Opera Theater staged performances of MessiaI” and Cavalli's La Didone for the Washington Early Music Festival. His interpretations have been hailed by the New York Times, Washington Post, and Baltimore Sun. Recently, as conductor and harpsichordist, he has worked with such groups as London's Academy of Ancient Music.

 

While at the Netherlands Opera Studio he conducted performances of Cavalli's La Calisto and Charpentier's Le Descent d'Orphee aux Enfers and Les Plaisirs de Versailles. 2014 saw him conduct performances of Monteverdi L'Incoronazione di Poppea at the Center for Opera Studies in Italy, where he will return in 2015 to conduct performances of La Calisto, and in 2016 for Alcina. Nelson also conducted productions of Alcina for the Accademia Europea dell'Opera and served as a director of music for the Canadian Operatic Arts Academy.

 

Maestro Nelson is Artistic Director of the Venice Opera Project, where he conducted numerous concerts and performances of Cavalli's Gli Amori d'Apollo e di Dafne. Nelson has also conducted performances of Vaughn William's Riders to the Sea for Amsterdam's Grachtenfestival, and Vivier's Love Songs for the Rotterdam Opera Days. Nelson remains active as a vocal coach, conductor, and lecturer at the Royal Hague Conservatory, Amsterdam Conservatory, and the University of Western Ontario. He is a regular adjudicator of the Internationaal Vocalisten Concours, serves as Artistic Adviser to the Belvedere International Vocal Competition, and is Artistic Director of the Rotterdam Operadagen Nieuwe Stemmen young artist program.
