BIO
Lauren Lenz is a stage director whose work is defined by a bold, contemporary theatrical sensibility and a collaborative, artist-centered approach to storytelling. Based in Detroit, Michigan, she is known for creating productions that are both provocative and accessible, with a particular affinity for contemporary opera and fresh reinterpretations of classic works. A trained intimacy choreographer, Lenz brings a consent-based, process-driven methodology to her rehearsal rooms, fostering environments that prioritize trust, clarity, and expressive freedom for performers.
Recent directing engagements include The Music Man, Ragtime, and Fiddler on the Roof with Bay View Music Festival, Così fan tutte with Opera NexGen; The Gift of the Magi and Dido & Aeneas with Opera de Metro; and The Pigeon Keeper at the University of Michigan, where she also served as Intimacy Director for Don Giovanni. Lenz served as the as Outreach Stage Director for The Secret River, a world premiere with Opera Orlando and worked with Pittsburgh Festival Opera as Young Artist Director, mentoring emerging singers while developing new and existing repertoire.
In addition to her directing work, Lenz has extensive professional experience in stage management and assistant directing working with directors such as Christopher Alden, Linda Brovsky, Garnett Bruce, Jeffrey Buchman, Dennis Whitehead Darling, Tom Diamond, Kathryn Frady, David Lefkowich, Julia Mintzer, Kevin Newbury, A. Scott Parry, Chía Patiño,Grant Preisser, and Mo Zhou for companies and programs such as as Opera Omaha, Opera Carolina, Opera Grand Rapids, Toledo Opera, Dayton Opera, Opéra Louisiane, Pittsburgh Festival Opera, and Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera.
