Aaron Chvatal is a costume designer whose vivid and visionary work in theatre and opera is renowned for its brilliant imagination, artistic ingenuity, and historical grounding for traditional and contemporary designs alike. Recent and upcoming opera credits include the world premiere of J. Mark Scearce’s Falling Angel for the Janiec Opera Company at Brevard and the upcoming world premiere of Tom Cipullo’s Mayo with stage director Dean Anthony.Additional opera design credits include two seasons as resident costume designer at the Brevard Music Festival, where Aaron designed productions of Don Pasquale with director David Gately, Street Scene,and co-designs of The Magic Fluteand A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Aaron spent five seasons at Opera on the James working on new productions of Cosi fan Tutte, Don Giovanni, Don Pasquale, Hansel and Gretel, La Voix Humane, Bon Appetit, Gianni Schicchi, and Suor Angelica. Aaron also spent three seasons working at The Castleton Opera Festival, where he designed a new production of Our Town. Other notable credits include design work for Minnesota Opera’s Project Opera, Washburn Opera Studio, and the UMKC Opera Conservatory. His portfolio includes productions with directors Helena Binder, Paul Houghtaling, Jeffrey Buchman, Cindy Oxberry, Ellen Schlaefer, and others.
Regional theatre design credits include productions at The Ordway Center for Performing Arts, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Penumbra Theatre Company, The History Theatre, The Unicorn Theatre, Yellow Tree Theatre, Spinning Tree Theatre, Park Square Theatre, and Mu Performing Arts.
Aaron resides in Minneapolis and received his Masters in Costume Design and Technology from the University of Missouri – Kansas City.
